Gravity's Rainbow (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2010 04:10 (A review of Gravity's Rainbow (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition))

As difficult as it is fucking epic, a meandering and often hallucinatory feast of literary bliss. If you're looking for a leisurely afternoon romp, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a rewarding and challenging read, then step right up and lose yourself in Pynchon's vast and complex universe.

Less Than Zero review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2010 04:06 (A review of Less Than Zero)

Ellis masterfully explores a nihilistic teenage wasteland, filled to the brim with cocaine and despair. Through startlingly realistic (and simplistic) imagery, he crafts an unnervingly bleak tale of apathy, channeling the voices of Camus and Salinger.
The unblinkingly casual narrative makes it all the more horrifying.

Black Hole review

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2010 04:05 (A review of Black Hole)

Erotic, yet nauseating. Hopeful, yet bleak.
One of the most human graphic novels I've encountered, reads as good as it looks. Burns' distinct illustrative style in stark black and white creates a duality of comfort and fear. Visceral and hallucinatory, perhaps hypnotic, there is a constant pairing of warm, sensual familiarity and inimical sickening estrangement.
A relatively quick read, but leaves you thinking long afterward.

"You liked Mr. Lonely, eh? I wasn't really too crazy about it. Werner Herzog was great, of course. But, the whole film left me feeling very meh."

"Crawlspace!? Klaus Kinski was great in this one, and veritably creepy. Sure it had some cheese, but worst of '86? Did you sleep through it?"

"Enjoyed 'Splinter' for it's cheese factor, pretty good popcorn flick. Loved 'Them' and 'Timecrimes', although not sure the latter really counts as horror. 'Mothman Prophecies' gave me the creeps when"

hey, it's been awhile Bullwinkle cockbreath. Harmony Korine's films are like that. i saw Trash Humpers a few weeks back and had what sounds like your Mr. Lonely reaction. there were a few things about Lonely, like dead priests washing up on shore, and i remember i particularly enjoyed Abe Lincoln.

I'm interested to know what you think I left off of my list. From one movie buff to another, that is. I always like hearing other people's picks.
